"BEACHCOMBER EXPLORER ARTS CAMPS"

Dr Beachcomb

Wander beyond the TV, the computer, and the mall!  Camps combine research, beachcombing techniques, shore exploring, and arts activities to remind you how fascinating our world is!

Camps are for kids of all ages - from 6 to 80 - and offer a fun, relaxing way to spend healthful, quality time with each other.

PLEASE NOTE
Each 2-3 hour session is a flat group price of $225 for up to 5 participants plus a $10 supply fee per person for arts projects. Special discounts are available for youth clubs, school groups and seniors. For more information go to "TO REGISTER" below.

1. Build an Artifact Collection
Learn basic research techniques to help identify artifact origins including the difference between button drops, quartz, and sea gems scattered along Bay shorelines. Head to the beach to practice your new beachcombing skills and start building you own special beach treasure collections.

2. All about Beach Glass
Learn to identify and sort beach glass by color, age, and condition. Try your luck on a local beach then use your finds to make "memory sticks" or decorate frames, boxes, or make glass mosaic hangings.

3. Archaeologists at the Shore
Trace mid-Chesapeake Bay history from the artifacts you discover on the beach. Learn about Chesapeake clay, the difference between quartz, granite and iron ore, how to differentiate between cigarette butts and 18th century clay pipe stems, vintage and antique ceramic shards or Native American-made stone flakes and arrowheads from simple pieces of rock. Try you luck at local beach to see what you come up with.

4. Beach Biologists
Learn the simple but fascinating facts about our beaches: how Chesapeake Bay was formed. What sand is made of. How old bay waters are. Why there are so many oyster and mussel shells on our beaches and for what purpose. 'Comb the beach for shells, rocks and driftwood and use them to make shingle-backed sculptures.

All participants are responsible for their lunch, water, sun block, and transportation.
